Straight to Gold

Most of us know that is does not matter how short a time a dog spends as part of the family the loss is still very hard to bare.

This week I had the pleasure of picking my granddaughter up from school, out of the classroom she came with a huge smile and looking very pleased with herself. " Nanny Debbie - I went straight to gold, I went straight to gold" she said hardly able to contain her excitement and pointing to a gold sticker on her uniform.

On the walk to our favourite little cafe, she informed me that she had gone 'straight to gold' because she had neatly written a long sentence about polar bears. I later discovered that she was the only one in the class to go 'straight to gold' for this exercise, I was met with a puzzled look when I declared "you know what this means don’t you, it makes you top of the class".

There is someone else who I think should be top of the class this week, and that is the wonderful Louise and her hubby who offered a foster home to little Sally.

10 year old Sally is in the care of Birmingham Greyhound protection and she was all prepared to go to a new home when it was discovered that she had cancer in her womb. Foster mum and dad must have been absolutely devastated by this news, I can only imagine how they felt for Sally who had a new life of hope and love ahead of her.

The foster home without hesitation decided (with Kerry I should imagine) that Sally should stay in their home. They will have made this decision knowing that she will only be with them for a short while and each day spent with Sally will be bitter sweet for them, they will love her already, who wouldn't. Most of us know that is does not matter how short a time a dog spends as part of the family the loss is still very hard to bare.

I would like to thank Louise for opening up her heart and home to Sally, she has gained her 'straight to gold award' by showing such compassion and strength, this act of kindness means that Sally will want for nothing and will be loved for the rest of her life.

In my mind there is no greater gift to bestow upon man/woman’s best friend.

“We who choose to surround ourselves
with lives even more temporary than our
own, live within a fragile circle;
easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps,
we would still live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only
certain immortality, never fully
understanding the necessary plan.”
