Dogs playing on a beach

Deborah Mason

Spring is upon us, but the weather as one would expect remains very unpredictable, only this morning we heard on the news that ice on the road near to where we live had caused a serious accident.

Roll on the warmer dryer days, I am starting to despair at the state of the drive and the public footpath that runs over part of it into the fields and woods beyond. Although this walk is literally on our doorstep I don't venture over there with the dogs at this time of year, not unless we have had a very dry spell, as the state we would all come back in is to much for me to bare, so off we go walking down the lanes instead.

George always looks longingly as we pass it by, often attempting and succeeding to get through the stile and his nose into the dog scented mud beyond. When we are in the house he senses when someone is walking this field with their dogs and he and Ruby climb on the sofa to have a good look out of the window, this is about as exciting as it gets by us, some would say boring, I say peace and tranquillity thank you very much.

George is a very sociable dog, so he loves it when the lady who delivers the parcels arrives, particularly as she brings dog treats, he gets excited when our groceries are delivered and he is even friends with the postman, but the biggest kisses he keeps for Fran ~ sorry Fran 2 paws firmly planted on your shoulders, his face meeting yours and lots of big sloppy wet kisses always seem to be reserved for you.

Walking with George is interesting, he is the strongest dog I have ever had, since we brought him a harness he has been better but he is still hard work, wanting to get everywhere as quickly as he possibly can, eyes straight ahead and off we go, while on the other hand Ruby is very genteel trotting along beside you enjoying her walk and taking in the sites and smells around her, swap over mid walk and you certainly notice the difference.

Ruby is really well built we call her Big Bertha, George is very slight in build, George has stamina, Ruby does not, ruby gets out of puff but George just keeps on going, however Ruby is the most agile, she can turn on a sixpence and even though George is faster this is how she beats him, by twisting and turning, shaking him off, and then making for the home run, she outwits George every single time.

I defy anyone to find me a greater spectacle of joy and happiness then that of watching lurchers/Greyhounds running and playing together it really is a sight to behold, one word of caution though do not stand in the way of a running hound, it will only end in disaster.

I would like to end my blog today by saying a very big thank you to Angela Hossack and her brother Jamie MacDougall. Angela is in the process of having a book of poems that she has written published, this book is entitled "Miss Maggie's Supper Box", the book is illustrated by her brother James who is a very talented artist. Angela has funded this herself with proceeds from the first run of these books being donated to Miss Maggie's Supper box fund.

I know some of you have already pre~ordered your copies and I will be getting in touch with you over the next day or two to confirm the arrangements but that's not all........... Angela and her brother have also offered the original drawings to me for the Evesham Greyhound & Lurcher Rescue Grand Christmas Auction 2017, having seen some of Jamie's work we are in for a treat and EGLR are definitely onto a winner.
